Price Paid At Auction For Mark Shahal's Famous Painting Known

The masterpiece of the Belarusian artist was sold at Sotheby's auction.

The painting "Above the City" by Mark Shahal, which he created in 1924, was sold at the Sotheby's auction called Modern Evening Auction, held in New York on November 14, 2023, reports the "Belarus and the World".

The canvas from a private Japanese collection, the name of which sounds in French as Au-dessus de la ville, was expected to be sold for an amount ranging from $12 to $18 million.

Two potential buyers were fighting long enough for the work of the artist from Vitsebsk, with whom their representatives in the hall were consulting via the phone in the course of the auction.

In the end, the auctioneer hit the hammer and announced the sale of the masterpiece for $ 13.3 million. Taking into account all additional payments, this translated into a final sum of $15,616,200.
