BPF denied holding rally in honour of Slutsk uprising

Vital Amelyanovich, head of the Slutsk Belarusian Popular Front, was rejected holding a rally on November 23 dedicated to anniversary of the Slutsk uprising 1920. The politician thinks the denial is politically motivated and is going to appeal to a court.

An answer, signed by chairman of the Slutsk district executive committee on November 13, says a place near the museum, where a rally is held traditionally, is not suitable for mass events. Vital Amelyanovich thinks this decision is politically motivated pbnf.org writes.

“We hold a rally near the museum every year. In fact, it is the only site in the town connected with the Slutsk uprising. We have never had problems with permission of the district executive committee,” he noted.

The activist of the BPF party has sent another application demanding to appoint alternative place of gathering for a rally on 23 November.

“If our right for peaceful meetings is not secured, we will go to law,” Vital Amelyanovich told in an interview to BelaPAN.

The youth wing of the BPF, “The Youth of the BPF”, is going to trip to Slutsk on November 23 regardless of permission of the district executive committee. Youth activists have hired a bus for all those who want to visit the place of the Slutsk Uprising. To join the trip, can register via phone by calling number (44) 7634251 (VELCOM).

“Slutsk insurgents are an example for our youth. Every year, we go to Sluts to paid tribute to their memory. In my view, officials don’t realize how important how this event for the Belarusian independence,” Franak Vyachorka, leader of “The Youth of BPF”, believes.

According to him, the youth is going to print stickers, calendar and postcards dedicated to the anniversary of the uprising.

The Slutsk defence action or the Slutsk uprising was an armed attempt to defend the independence of the Belarusian National Republic in the region of the town of Slutsk in November-December 1920. Brigades, formed mainly of local inhabitants, were opposing the Soviet army for about a month.
